The altarpiece and the altar stand outline an area within a
sanctuary that is figuratively closest to God. The altar stand
is a kind of a control room, through which the secular entourage
of god monitors and controls the congregation. The altar embodies
the mystical and secret core of religions, which priests, bishops
and prophets transmit and interpret to the congregation.
In the work, the imagery of altarpieces is replaced by figures
that hover in the space carrying out the three main religions’ prayer
rituals. The praying figures can be effaced at any given moment
to an unknown other level through a hatch in the ceiling. When
religious symbols and effects have been removed from the praying
ritual, all that remains are bodies repeating gestures without
any magical powers.
